Canopy Fly Feeder – Slow-Release Fruit Fly Feeding Station for Dart Frogs
Supplemental Feeding for Times When You Need a Little More Coverage
The Hatch & Habitat Canopy Fly Feeder is a slow-release fruit fly feeding station designed specifically for dart frog keepers.
Rather than dumping a large quantity of fruit flies into the enclosure at once, the Canopy Fly Feeder allows flies and larvae to gradually emerge from an established culture over time, creating a more continuous supplemental food source.
It can be especially useful when you're away from home for several days, when you want additional feeding opportunities between normal meals, or when working with frogs that could benefit from access to small amounts of food more frequently.
Important: This Is a Supplemental Feeder
The Canopy Fly Feeder is not intended to replace regular feeding with properly supplemented fruit flies.
Your normal feeding routine should remain the primary source of nutrition.
The Canopy is designed to provide an additional slow-release food source alongside your regular feeding schedule — not become the sole long-term diet for your frogs.
When traveling, it should also be considered one part of your enclosure-care plan and does not replace appropriate misting, environmental monitoring, or other necessary animal care.
Slow-Release Fruit Flies & Larvae
The internal culture chamber allows fruit flies to continue breeding while limiting how quickly they can leave the feeder.
Small exit openings near the base allow flies and emerging larvae to gradually make their way onto the feeding tray, where dart frogs can hunt them naturally.
This can be helpful for:
- Short trips away from home
- Providing additional feeding opportunities throughout the day
- Frogs that could benefit from supplemental calories
- Young or growing frogs
- Breeding animals
- Encouraging natural hunting behavior
Because the release is gradual, food can remain available longer than it would after a single traditional feeding.
Built-In Supplement Tray
One of the most important features of the Canopy Fly Feeder is the protected lower feeding tray.
Calcium powder and other appropriate supplements can be placed directly onto this tray.
As fruit flies and larvae emerge from the feeder, they must move across the tray before entering the enclosure, allowing them to come into contact with the supplement powder before being eaten.
This gives keepers an additional way to expose slow-release feeders to supplementation.
Because the amount of powder transferred to individual feeders can vary, this feature should supplement — not replace — your normal routine of feeding properly dusted fruit flies.
The Canopy Helps Protect Your Supplements
Traditional open feeding trays have a major problem in dart frog vivariums:
Misting systems get them wet.
Once calcium or vitamin powder becomes saturated, it can clump, wash away, or become unusable.
The large overhead canopy helps shield the lower feeding tray from direct misting so the supplements remain usable longer.
That means the canopy isn't just decorative — it is an important functional part of the feeding system.
Helps Protect the Fruit Fly Culture
The canopy also provides protection for the culture chamber itself.
It helps:
- Shade the fruit fly media from direct enclosure lighting
- Reduce how quickly the media dries out
- Shield the culture from direct misting
- Reduce the chance of the media becoming overly wet
- Maintain a more stable environment inside the feeder
Dart frog vivariums are intentionally humid environments, but excessive water entering fruit fly media can quickly ruin a culture.
The canopy provides a physical barrier while still allowing the feeder chamber to breathe.
Fine-Mesh Ventilated Culture Chamber
The culture chamber uses a fine-mesh design that allows airflow while helping keep adult fruit flies contained until they reach the designated release area near the base.
Instead of large openings that allow too many flies to escape at once, the Canopy Fly Feeder uses smaller controlled exit points designed to encourage a slower release.
Designed Around Dart Frog Husbandry
The Canopy Fly Feeder was developed specifically around the challenges of feeding dart frogs in humid, heavily misted vivariums.
It combines:
- Slow-release feeding
- Culture protection
- Media shading
- Mist protection
- A protected supplement tray
- Natural hunting opportunities
- Fine-mesh ventilation
- Controlled feeder exit points
All in one compact feeding station.
Great for Short Trips
For experienced keepers who already have a stable enclosure and appropriate automated misting system, the Canopy Fly Feeder can provide an additional feeding buffer when you're away for a few days.
Rather than relying on a single large feeding immediately before leaving, an established culture can continue producing feeders that gradually emerge into the enclosure.
The Canopy Fly Feeder does not replace responsible animal care, environmental monitoring, or regular feeding.
PETG Construction
The Canopy Fly Feeder is 3D printed in PETG, selected for use in humid reptile and amphibian environments because of its combination of:
- Moisture resistance
- Durability
- Better temperature resistance than standard PLA
- Slight flexibility compared with more brittle plastics
- Suitability for routinely misted vivariums
Recommended Use
Use the Canopy Fly Feeder as a supplement to your normal dart frog feeding routine.
Continue regularly feeding appropriately sized fruit flies dusted with the calcium and vitamin supplements recommended for your animals.
The feeder can then provide additional flies and larvae between normal feedings.
Individual frog behavior and fruit fly culture production will vary, so monitor the feeder and adjust its use based on your animals and enclosure conditions.
